Preventing STIs
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are usually passed during unprotected oral, vaginal and anal sex. Some STIs are passed through skin-to-skin contact. Because many STIs do not always show symptoms, people can pass an STI to a partner without knowing they have one.
Practicing safer sex is a great way to reduce your risk of STIs. Using condoms or other kinds of protection during oral, anal and vaginal sex can prevent most STIs from passing from one person to another. You can also choose sexual activities that have lower chances of passing STIs.
SmartSexResource, the BC Centre for Disease Control's sexual health website, has a lot of information about what you can do to lower your chances of STIs. Learn more about safer sex and how to talk with partners about testing.
